NOT ALL SALT IS THE SAME
FOOD GRADE SALT EXPLAINED

For thousands of years salt has been an intrinsic part of life. Fundamental not only to our existence but to good health, salt is an essential mineral. Over 14,000 different uses – and still counting – salt is the mineral that could actually be called the stuff of life.

Of course, you know that salt is used in cooking, garnishing, and food production to enhance the flavor of the food we eat (with naturally zero calories). Not only does salt create the desired “salty” taste, it also affects other flavors, such as sweet and tart. Let’s face it, without salt, many of our favorite foods would be bland and dull.

As an aside, did you also know that salt is used to soften hard water and to deice roads and parkways? In animal feed and salt licks it can help keep livestock healthy and strong. It is even used in tanning leather, oilfield drilling, shrimping and seafood fisheries, textile manufacturing, and concrete production.

Not all salt is created equal. In fact, there is a very distinct difference between food grade salt and salt that is intended for other applications. Unlike the salt used in keeping your driveway free from ice, food grade salt is a much higher purity of salt used to enhance the flavor of your food and beverages. Food grade salt is so essential that it’s said a good chef needs only three things: a fire, a knife, and salt!

It is important to eat salt in the proper amounts to reap its health benefits. Sodium helps to maintain a healthy balance of fluid in the body and is also needed to transport nutrients into the cells in our bodies. The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that Americans consume a minimum of 500 mg/day of sodium to maintain good health. However, individual needs may vary based on a person’s health and activity levels.

Our food grade salt brands Tru-Flo®, GULF®, and Flavor House have many great qualities. They are uniform in crystal size, fast-dissolving, and produce a clear brine. They also meet the high standards of the FDA and the Food Chemical Codex and are annually certified Kosher. There are a number of different Tru-Flo® food grade products for all your needs, such as iodized, plain, and our highest purity LCM salt. Check out our new website, for more information.
